Pope Benedict XVI announces his resignation
Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation to the world today on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes 11th February 2013. One's immediate reaction on hearing the news could be, can a pope retire?, Is the position not a life long one, till death do us part? What happens now?
Usually a pope serves until his death, he can step down if his health gets in the way of fulfilling his mission. Canon 332: 2 provides for the resignation of a pope as long as it is made freely and communicated properly. It is due to ill health that the Pope has made his decision and he has freely made it known.
After Pope Benedict XVI resigns at the end of February, a conclave of Cardinals will be called, and a new pope will be elected.
We thank God for the wonderful service Pope Benedict XVI has given to us and we ask God to send his Holy Spirit to guide and direct the election of a new pope. Let us remember Pope Benedict in our prayers and pray that his health will improve.
