"You must therefore set no bounds to your love, just as your heavenly Father sets none to his."
(Mt. 5:48)
By what is love for the poor inspired?
Love for the poor is inspired by the Gospel of the Beatitudes and by the example of Jesus in his constant concern for the poor. Jesus said, "Whatever you have done to the least of my breathern, you have done to me" (Matthew 25:40). Love for the poor shows itself through the struggle against material poverty. The spiritual and corporal works of mercy and the many charitable institutions formed throughout the centuries are a concrete witness to the preferential love for the poor which characterises the disciples of Jesus. Cf. (Com of CCC 520)
Living the Word
Some time ago in Calcutta we had a great difficulty in getting sugar. And I don't know how the word got around to the children, but a little boy four years old, a Hindu boy, went home and told his parents, " I will not eat sugar for three days. I will give my sugar to Mother Teresa for her children." After three days his father and mother brought him to our house. I had never met them before, and this little one could scarcely pronounce my name. But he knew exactly what he had come to do. He knew that he wanted to share his love. Words of Mother Teresa
To Show Love
Love begins at home.
If we do not love one another
whom we see twenty-four hours,
how can we love those we see only once?
We show love through by thoughtfulness
by kindness
by sharing joy
by sharing a smile...
through the little things.
A little child has no difficulty in loving,
has no obstacles to love.
And that is why Jesus said,
"Unless you become like little children..."

This month let us be a people of love
May we show love for the poor in our prayers, our alms giving and our fasting.
